Review the Dublin Theatre Festival Archives
Dublin Theatre Festival was established in 1957, making it Europe's longest-running specialist theatre festival. Over the years the festival has premiered work by Ireland's theatre greats and staged productions by some of the world's most celebrated artists and companies.
Our digital archive is a work-in-progress, compiled with the assistance of Patrick Lonergan, Aoife Spillane-Hinks, Annette Ryan and Siobhra Quinlan. Further resources about past festivals and productions, including imagery, credits and promotional materials will be uploaded to the website over time. Meanwhile, for more information on productions staged as part of the festival from the year 1992 - 2013, visit our secondary archive.

Dublin International Theatre Festival 1958
This Festival was to have featured plays by Samuel Beckett, The Drums of Father Ned by Sean O’Casey, and an adaptation of Joyce’s Ulysses by Alan McClelland
It was officially ‘postponed’ following objections to the inclusion of this ‘obscene’ and ‘objectionable’ material by Archbishop John Charles McQuaid and opposition to this by artists.
