Three fingers below the knee: Mundo Perfeito
Oct 2 - Oct 5: Project Arts Centre (Cube)
“…an extraordinary moment for reflection on the present dangers to freedom of thought.” Jornal Público
Can words be dangerous?
Prompted by this question, Tiago Rodrigues delved into the archives of the censorship commission set up in Portugal during Salazar’s dictatorship. Of the thousands of plays ripped apart in censorship reports – both classical and new works – it is not what was left that interested Rodrigues, but rather what was cut and why…
Three fingers below the knee exposes the oppression of artistic and political freedom felt in Portugal during the 48-year dictatorship that governed the country.Drawing directly from censorship reports for his play text, Rodrigues interrogates and subverts the hidden histories of his country, transforming censors into playwrights and probing what was left unsaid. Moving seamlessly between poetry, narration and documentary, this is a penetrating work from one of the most influential young artists in Portuguese theatre.
